Achieving net zero is considered essential for limiting global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in the Paris Agreement. Many countries, regions, cities, businesses and organizations have committed to reaching net zero emissions by mid-century or earlier as part of their efforts to address climate change and transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future. “Net zero refers to the balance between the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere and the amount removed from it”.
Achieving net carbon zero is of paramount importance for the world due to several key reasons:
Achieving net zero implies that the total emissions produced by human activities are effectively
offset by actions that remove or reduce an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the
atmosphere, resulting in a neutral or zero overall impact on the climate system.
